Tongham.

Tongham is a commuter village laid out along The Street, hemmed in by two major roads and effectively continuous with the Aldershot edge. Car ownership is high because the railway went: the Ash Junction to Farnham line through the village was closed and the track lifted, and Aldershot Stadium, which stood here from 1950 to 1992, has gone too.

Door to door, and the local landmarks

Every journey starts at your own door, so nobody has to walk to a meeting point. These are simply the places people name when they book, and the landmarks drivers navigate by. Hogs Back Brewery on The Street is the address that comes up most, with its tap room, beer garden and shop. The White Hart at number 76 and The Cricketers are the village pubs. St Paul's Church of 1865 and Poyle Park in the east of the parish are the other regular points, along with the Hog's Back Hotel out on the A31.

What drivers watch for

The brewery is the reason most of our evening work here exists: people travel in to drink, and the bus cover after dark does not match the demand. The village layout is strongly linear along The Street, so giving a house number rather than just Tongham saves the driver a slow crawl looking for a name.

Do you pick up from Hogs Back Brewery?

Regularly. It is Surrey's largest independent brewery, housed in a barn dating from 1788 on The Street, and its tap and beer garden pull visitors from a wide area into a village with no station and thin evening buses. Booking the return when you set out is the sensible move.

Which station is nearest to Tongham?

Ash, about a mile north-east, then Aldershot at roughly a mile and a half west. Farnham is around four miles south-west. Tongham's own line closed and the track was lifted, so there is nothing in the village itself.

Is Tongham quick to reach from Guildford or Farnborough?

Quicker than it feels. The A331 Blackwater Valley road runs along the western edge and the A31 along the south, so despite the rural setting the connections are fast in both directions.
