Getting around
The Sands.

The village takes its name from the Bargate sandstone and sand in the ground here. It sits about a mile south of the A31, on unclassified lanes, with no classified road running through it at all. The parish is overwhelmingly detached housing and is separated from its neighbours by open country on every side.

Every journey starts at your own door, so nobody has to walk to a meeting point. These are simply the places people name when they book, and the landmarks drivers navigate by. Farnham Golf Club on Blighton Lane, founded in 1896 and running to 6,613 yards off the championship tees, and The Barley Mow on Littleworth Road are the two names people give most. The Sands Room village hall sits at The Green. St Laurence at Seale, twelfth century in origin and rebuilt in the 1860s and 70s, is about a mile north.

What drivers watch for

The mile of unlit lane between the village and the A31 is the thing to plan around, particularly after a function at the golf club. Crooksbury Hill and the North Downs Way bring walkers at weekends, and with no shop, no post office and no real bus corridor, almost every trip from here is booked rather than improvised.

Regularly, and it is our main reason for being out here. Society days, competitions and clubhouse functions all finish with people who would rather not drive, and there is a mile of unlit lane between the club and the A31.

Is The Sands in Waverley like the rest of Farnham?

No, and it surprises people. Despite the Farnham postal address, Seale and Sands is in Guildford borough. It makes no difference to the fare, but it does explain why the parish notices look different.

Can you pick up from the Barley Mow?

Yes. The Barley Mow on Littleworth Road has been community-owned since October 2024, backed by more than a hundred local shareholders, and it is the usual pickup point in the village.

Is there a shop in The Sands?

Not any more, the shop and the post office have both closed. Combined with being well off any main bus corridor, that leaves residents relying on a car or a taxi for most errands.
