Churt.

Churt has a genuine village centre at Crossways, with a shop and post office, a barber, a restaurant and a car dealer, which makes it less dependent on Farnham than most of the parishes around here. The housing is scattered across a squarish parish of heath and small farms. David Lloyd George farmed here, and both John Noakes and Peter Alliss lived in the village.

The Crossways Inn and Bel and The Dragon are the two most-named points, with St John the Evangelist Church, built in local Bargate stone and consecrated in 1868, and St John's Infant School both on or beside the Crossways junction. Churt sits between two busy outdoor destinations, Frensham Great Pond on the parish's northern edge and the three conical sandhills of the Devil's Jumps just above the village, so summer weekends bring visitors who did not plan how to get back. The A287 also carries A3 diversion traffic whenever the Hindhead Tunnel closes.

Where exactly is Churt in relation to Farnham?

About five and a half miles due south, down the A287 towards Hindhead, so allow thirteen to fifteen minutes. It is south rather than south-west, which sat navs sometimes get muddled about.

Can you pick up from the Crossways Inn or Bel and The Dragon?

Both regularly. The Crossways Inn has been trading since at least 1838, and Bel and The Dragon, the former Pride of the Valley built in 1869, is an eighteen-bedroom country inn at the Jumps Road and Tilford Road junction.

Do journeys take longer when the Hindhead Tunnel is shut?

Yes, noticeably. The A287 through Churt is the diversion route when the A3 tunnel closes, so if you have a flight or a train to catch on one of those days it is worth telling us and leaving earlier.

Which station do people from Churt use?

Farnham, about five and a half miles north, or Haslemere five to six miles south via Hindhead. There is no station in the village and the number 19 is the only bus.
