It is defined almost entirely by the forest, the research station and the visitor attractions rather than by a village centre, because it does not really have one.

Door to door, and the local landmarks

Every journey starts at your own door, so nobody has to walk to a meeting point. These are simply the places people name when they book, and the landmarks drivers navigate by. Alice Holt Forest Centre is the name that comes up most, with its café, cycle hire, play trails and a weekly parkrun. Go Ape operates on the same site. Birdworld, the largest bird park in the country at 26 acres, is just north at Holt Pound. Alice Holt Lodge, the forest research station established in 1946, is the other fixed address here.

What drivers watch for

Parking is the whole story. The Alice Holt car park is cashless, charges up to £15 at peak times and closes at eight in the evening. On summer weekends and in the school holidays it fills early, so groups arriving by car often spend longer finding a space than they would have spent on the fare.

Both. Go Ape sits on the Forest Centre site and Birdworld is immediately north at Holt Pound. Go Ape session times are booked in advance, which makes the pickup easy for us to time.

No. The Halfway House on the A325 closed around 2013 and is not trading, and there is no village shop either, so anything social means a short run out to Blacknest, Rowledge or Wrecclesham.

What happens if we are still in the forest after the car park closes?

The Alice Holt car park closes at eight, and the only bus is the service along the A325. Book the return leg when you book the outbound and it is not a problem.
